| Old Fashioned Coffee Shop |
[Jul. 9th, 2008|06:58 pm] |
I'm meeting a friend in the Northcote/Preston area in a couple of weeks and was wondering if there were any good ole' fashioned coffee shops in that area that you might recommend? Close to public transport is a big plus.
And whilst we're at it, perhaps if you have any recommendations for coffee houses/shops anywhere in melbourne where you can sit back in a sofa and enjoy a cup of java? I'm getting a little over these ultra-mod coffee shops which feel like you're in a sterilized dentist office. (Call me old fashioned *cough*)
There was a place called 'Tryst' in South Yarra that I used to frequent many years ago. By day it was a lovely hide away to enjoy a (very well made fantastical) cup of chocolate or coffee, then by night became a bar. That's my recommendation but I don't live over that side of town anymore :(
♥ Thanks!
Kira. |

So as usual I've left booking flights to Melb from Sydney too late, and the cheapest virgin one is $119, bugger that.
Jetstar. Avalon. 40 bucks each way cheaper, is it worth the effort?
Is the shuttle service from Avalon to the CBD reliable? Or how much would a cab be?
Guide me =) |

I believe that as much as we try to be tolerant, open and friendly people, there will always be categories of people we don't trust.
There are many categories of dudes I don't trust. Some of my closest friends fall into these categories - they have earned my trust and friendship in different ways. However, if you fall into one of these categories, it will take me a while to warm to you.
...dudes who are into Improv. ...dudes who are really into Cycling. ...dudes who are really into Cycling and want to talk to me about the Tour De France. ...dudes who can juggle and make a habit of showing me they can juggle. ...dudes who bring guitars to parties and insist on breaking them out for a solo set of 'bro classics'. ...dudes who will not have a beer, citing the taste.* ...dudes who are into any Anime that doesn't feature giant killer robots. ...dudes where it is obvious they have spent more than 500 dollars on their outfit and still look like an eleven year old girl. ...dudes who deny the bumming of a Cigarette. ...dudes who make a point of talking up how much of a Feminist they are, especially in front of a bunch of girls. ...dudes with purposely messed up hair or severe fringes. ...dudes who wear tight black jeans. ...dudes who don't like Saving Private Ryan. ...dudes who cannot see any enjoyment in any sport whatsoever and cannot seem to see the social, physical and mental benefits it brings people. ...dudes with affected accents. ...dudes who cannot abide television. ...dudes who like to take naked chest shots.
I will add to this list as more come to me.
Tell me, what are the traits or habits that make you unwary of a dude or a chick?

When someone's heart is breaking openly among friends, the first person to speak and say, "It's all right; you'll be all right," has most likely never been in love. The ones who look on and offer a silent gesture -- a hand squeeze; a pair of arms held out, waiting for a person to collapse into; a look -- are the ones who understand all too perfectly. Having too much to say is near identical to having nothing to say, and silence never makes a fool of itself. Some cracks and bruises don't need pointing out. The sum of our scars equal an unspoken understanding. |

| Dreyer: Joan of Arc, Vampyre, Once upon a time |
[Jul. 9th, 2008|10:53 am] |
Dear Maniacs,
Final screening of the Dreyer retrospective at the Melbourne Cinematheque tonight.
7.00pm - The Passion of Joan of Arc (1927)

Dreyer's intense, profound & stylistically innovative film seems like an historical document from a time before cinema existed. This landmark work, conceived from the actual trial manuscripts, is driven by Rudolph Maté’s starkly illuminated images & Dreyer's meticulous attention to the brutal & experiential dimension’s of Joan’s plight, evoking from the singular Maria Falconetti the cinema's most serene & agonised performance. With Antonin Artaud & Michel Simon.
8:30pm Vampyr (1932)
Dreyer’s memorable, unofficial retelling of the Bram Stoker classic is marked by a concern for the oneiric & the interplay of light & shadow. With Rudolph Maté’s cinematography imbuing the film with a dreamlike reality suggestive of the liminal realm of the vampire, Dreyer went far beyond the purely Gothic, creating a horror film that not only contains a number of the most unsettling images in cinema history (including the point-of-view of a body being led to burial) but that makes most other examples pale into insignificance.
9:50pm Once Upon a Time (1922)
While approximately half of its original footage has been lost, Dreyer’s adaptation of Holger Drachmann’s popular play remains an engaging early work. Thought lost until 1964, when fragments of celluloid were discovered in a long-forgotten vault, the surviving footage is supported by stills & intertitles, which help to make up the complete narrative. With its echoes of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew & its fairytale atmosphere, Dreyer’s film is a light-hearted affair of considerable historical interest.

For more information about the Dreyer season and the Cinematheque program for 2008 please visit http://www.melbournecinematheque.org/

Hearn in all her glory.
Sitting silent in the Toronto Portlands the Richard L Hearn Thermal Generating Station is under going a metamorphosis. Built in the 1950s, this used to produce the power for Toronto, by 1983 her generators were silent.
The old coal fields are now gone. The construction of the new Portland Energy Center has begun.

| | Void Construct - Asphyxia | ] | I cry on my way to work each morning... but only because cycling down Hill Street at 40kph, five minutes after getting out of bed, makes my eyes water.
Not this morning tho. Cos i accidentally slept for 16 hours. Went for a snoozy at 4pm yesterday n woke up at 8am this morning. So i got up, had a chocolate bar and V for breakfast, put on some :Wumpscut: and cycled over to the tax office. Paid $200 to get my taxes for 2004 and 2007 done. Fetched myself a grand total of $2510, which is a relief as it will contribute to my trip greatly.
At work the other day we had a laugh, between chasing passengers who'd borrowed a pen off one of us (then disappeared with it) around the international terminal (when we found him he looked like he thought he was gunna get mugged), playing reverse tug-o-war (aka push-o-war) with the.... tugs and sneaking drinks at lunchtime, it was a fun day. I might even miss working there when i leave.
I watched 'The Worlds Fastest Indian' today, a great film about New Zealander Burt Munro, who in 1962 defied many odds to break the World Land Speed Record for a motorcycle under 1000cc in capacity, at the Bonneville Saltflats, on a 1920 Indian Scout Motorcycle... at the age of 63.
He broke 200mph on a 47 year old motorcycle that looked like this:

And underneath the body kit...

Crazyman... |

| | nesty | ] | I have lived in my flat for six months and I am tired of it looking like hobosville. Where are the auction houses in Melbourne? I'm thinking the awesome mid-week, estate-sale ones. I live in Brunswick so somewhere in the North would be best, but willing to travel for cheap vintage furniture. |

Any good websites/places/job boards/etc. to look for part time jobs in the CBD/North area here that I'm missing?
I've been using Seek, MyCareer, CareerOne, The Age, The Leader Newspapers, The Melbourne Times.. Even the small "Job Board" at my school. I'm having no luck. You can tell I'm getting desperate, can't you? |
