i'm writing from the farm. i'm on potato duty, as usual. i'm a potato practitioner; nobody here understands the science of cooking chips quite like i do. it's alright. everybody has a talent. mine happens to be spuds.

the weekend has been reasonable. i had a rolling start on friday night; home early enough to get out of my suit and into civvies before drinks with the clerks. i'm the only lawyer that joins in and i find that hard to fathom. they're all perfectly lovely and great company.

caught up with mike, bonnie, dan and george (aka "doctor love") later on at Lambsgo. friday nights there have become an organic conclusion to the end of a working week.

saturday morning was unexpectedly daunting. i awoke abruptly in a terrible funk at 10am. i attribute that in part to the bad dreams i know i must have been having (know what it's like when you can feel the residue of a bad dream and yet remember nothing of its contents?) and in part to the overhang of alcohol from the night before. the solution involved two epic naps, a big bowl of tortilla soup (hello, leftovers) and successive episodes of Flight of the Conchords.

i settled a little homework and headed out to LGB for round two with nick. mike met us on punt road and we made the Long Walk to the Pub together. in that warm, welcoming place, we put away two bowls of fries (+ mayo + sour cream), smoked some clove cigarettes, worked our way up the 101 list and considered that things in our lives aren't so bad. a great night.

today, i've been with my family. i arrived shortly before lunchtime and over the course of the afternoon, i've chopped wood, given my dad a thrashing at table tennis, brewed a little beer and prepared the 'taters.

i think they're just about ready.

What the... : We'll be walking/ambling/jogging and eventually running from Richmond, 'round the MCG, up to Flinders Street, across the bridge, down across the river and back up to Swan Street. It will be haphazard. Professional athletes are banned. It will involve significant stretches of brisk walking and talking shit. But the best part is taking your seat at the Corner Hotel at the end of it all, your pint of ale in front of you and your fellow unfit flunkies by your side. What could be better?

Mikey and I have tested this. It has a 100% success rate. You trust us, right?

michelle has been in singapore for the last week. she returns on friday night. in the meantime, i've been flying solo. it's pretty strange - after two years of living out of michelle's pockets, i suddenly find myself spending a good seventeen hours out of every twenty-four completely silent. in part i've appreciated it. i've watched all the dvd's that she has never wanted to (next stop : the good, the bad and the ugly). i've also proven to myself that i am in fact capable of self-sufficiency. my shirts just don't come out the same after a wash, though, and her side of the bed gets awful cold in her absence. it's like a ziggy cartoon. the place just isn't the same without her. i'll be glad to make the airport dash on friday.

out of pity, a friend invited me over for dinner on monday night. this is what i'll be taking with me.
